Sister Bag

This is my contemporary interpretation of a classic Ngarindjerri bag known as the sister basket. Traditionally, sisters would weave this bag using reeds, creating two halves that were later joined together. In my version, I've crafted it from sewn and stuffed satin and polyester fabric, incorporating recycled cotton T-shirt yarn in a chunky woven style, using the traditional Ngarindjerri stitch. This blend of traditional technique with modern materials allows me to bring my cultural heritage into the urban setting in a fresh and innovative manner. This wearable artwork not only celebrates my heritage but also fills me with pride as I showcase traditional weaving in a unique way.

The Sister Bag was nominated for the Wearable Art Category in the National Indigenous Fashion Awards 2024
