About me
First basket
This is the first basket that I made when I was about 10 years old down at Camp Coorong with Aunty Ellen. You can see her perfect stitches in the middle as she started it off for me and then my wobbly stitches.
We collected the sedge grass and learnt about the soaking and drying process of how my old people did it.
I have always kept this first basket, it’s very important to me and I always reflect on how far I’ve come with my weaving.
Jewellery and Regalia
My interest in jewellery and regalia all started from visiting art galleries and seeing all of these grand portraits of people who looked nothing like me. They were often dripping in jewels and flexing wealth and power. The portraits were framed in huge detailed gold frames.
I remember thinking “This could never be me, my people never had a chance to be this. But why not?”
So I created woven frames to replicate the grandness of these golden frames place myself in it. I soon realised I needed jewels, I couldn’t have a portrait without jewels.
Family
I always find myself coming back to looking at the theme of family and inter-generational connections. Family is very important to me and the stories and experiences that we share are invaluable.
I’m at the weird age of seeing generational changes and this has absolutely influenced my work. I have made a lot of work about my Nana and looking at strong matriarchs since her passing in 2023.
Recently I have collaborated with one of my nieces and introducing her to culture and art, which is vital continuing the knowledge of power down to the next generation.
